Kensa Heat Pumps

Who are Kensa?

Kensa are a fast-growing collection of award-winning businesses. Privately-owned, and headquartered in Cornwall, England. Kensa have been ground source heat pump experts since they were established in 1999.

Much more than just a heat pump manufacturer Kensa partner with countless installers, specifiers and housing providers to design and install outstandingly well-designed systems which out-perform the market.

Kensa (ken-zah) gleaned their name from the Cornish word for “first” and have, in many ways, been living up to this name ever since:

  1. A long-established market leader Kensa are the first, and remain the only, dedicated ground source heat pump manufacturer in the UK.
  2. Perfect for large properties with high heat demands Kensa were the first to develop the largest single-phase ground source heat pump available in their 24kW Twin model.
  3. Kensa have, in contrast, also developed a Shoebox range, the first and only ground source heat pump series small and quiet enough to be situated within flats and apartments.

Kensa’s unrivalled experience and knowhow is the key to their success. Kensa have pioneered the adoption of heat pump technology in the UK and pride themselves on exceeding expectations with the quality of their technical support.

Why We Use Kensa Heat Pumps In New Zealand

In the early years of installing GSHPs in New Zealand we used European or American heat pumps, partly due to these countries using heat pumps this way for many years, North America has been using Ground Source to heat and cool buildings with ducted air since the 1950’s.

One of the biggest problems we kept hitting was nearly all these machines are three phase units when they got over 16Kw thermal capacity as its common in Europe and the USA for buildings to have three phase power, this unfortunately is not the case in New Zealand, we were finding clients had to pay a considerable additional fee to the power companies for a three-phase connection and large annual line rental fees.  This was having a big impact on the efficiency of the system as all the savings made from the heat pump went to pay the line companies additional charges.  Then we found Kensa, a UK company making twin compressor units that could go to 24Kw thermal capacity on a single-phase power supply, problem solved YAY.

Therma Working With Kensa Heat Pumps

Steve Jarvis (centre) with Guy Cashmore and Paul Dennison from Kensa

To date Therma Ltd has supplied and installed many Kensa Heat Pumps in New Zealand and every year this is growing rapidly, out of all the Kensa units we have installed there has been an incredibly low component failure rate,Steve Jarvis (centre) with Guy Cashmore and Paul Dennison from Kensaeven with all the other benefits Kensa offer this alone is why we will always recommend these great units.

As a company solely dedicated to the design and manufacture of Ground Source units Kensa are a truly specialised company, they have a team of design engineers to assist with any technical needs required, a large manufacturing team that is always happy to look at any specific changes we may need to make to suit New Zealand installations, a national contracting company in the UK with years of installation experience should we need advice on any specific set up and an ever helpful administration team to make exports and logistics trouble free.

“Kensa and Therma have been successfully working together for the last 7 years.

Over this period Kensa Heat Pumps have exported over 30 heat pumps to NZ which have subsequently been used in a wide range of Therma projects.

Steve has extensive design knowledge and utilises design tools like BIM to model projects and pinpoint design loads. Together specifying heat pumps from across our extensive range that satisfies heating, hot water and cooling requirements.

Projects to date included:

  • Installing Shoe box heat pumps on communal ground arrays.
  • Shared ground arrays feeding multiple holiday chalets, each holiday let featuring individual Shoebox heat pumps.
  • Individual self build projects – featuring Kensa’s 20-24kW Twin Compacts, the largest single phase units on the market.
  • Large commercial 100kW projects, featuring the Kensa Plant Room range cascaded together to provide tailored outputs for the high heat demands of commercial applications.

Kensa are very pleased to be associated with Steve and his team and are keen to grow this partnership and continue to be involved in the developing NZ market.”
